What better way to immerse yourself in another culture than to rent someone's home or apartment for your holiday?
Living a different life, even for a few days, is part of the fun of travel -- and what better way to immerse yourself in another culture than to rent someone’s home or apartment for your holiday?
The vacation-rentals market, once a tiny niche in the travel industry, is thriving. A craving for more unique and authentic lodging, as well as rising hotel prices have contributed to the jump in popularity of vacation rentals.
And finding a rental vacation home has never been more convenient with dozens of websites specializing in holiday or vacation rentals all over the world.
For instance, one search of Craigslist, a San Francisco-based website, produced thousands of rental vacation home listings, including a villa in Hawaii, a beach vacation home in Ireland, a cabin in Tahoe City, and a Haiku Plantation.
Yet another site, VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owners) listed an extensive selection of listings world wide, including a luxury penthouse in Venice, steps away from Piazza San Marco. The cost for an one week stay for two was $1250 US – or approximately $89 per person each day.
And a more modest flat nestled in a 16th century home overlooking the Canal San Andrea, came in at about 700 Euros for one week’s accommodations, or about $966 CDN.
A typical 3-star hotel room in Venice ranged from $250-$350 CDN per night, according to Expedia.
Note: Search the websites for the most current listings.
The pros and cons
With hotel rates on the rise, particularly in cities like London, Paris, New York and Tokyo, vacation rentals can offer more economical accommodation, particularly for families or groups. Other benefits include more space and amenities such as full-kitchen facilities or other perks like a private beach, swimming pool or hot tub.
Booking a holiday home can also have potential risks. A few things to consider:
